Siruna - Your open source gateway to the mobile internet

Siruna is a mobile internet company that created the first open-source content adaptation gateway, developed in Java. It's technology facilitates creation, access and interaction with mobile websites and applications while optimizing user experience. It combines existing open source technologies for content adaptation with specific components for mobile applications such as location based services, context awareness and user profiling. The Siruna platform is not only for websites but creates mobile access to any web application.

The Siruna technology was developed in a research project at the IBBT (Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology) and UGent (University of Ghent), originally under the name Mobixx in 2005. The research project was started in 2005. In 2007, a company was founded from the original developers of the technology.

License

Originally developed as a research project, the Siruna technology was made available under a dual license strategy in 2008. The same source code is offered under two different licenses. Both the community edition and the commercial edition are based on the same platform.

The community edition is available for use under the 'GNU Affero General Public License - AGPL'. This means that the software is free to use, modify and distribute as long as for all the applications, using Siruna technology, the code is made available to the open source community. The open source policy regarding the use of the Siruna software software describes the conditions for using the software as an open source project.

Customers that do not want to be restricted by open source policies are invited to subscribe to a commercial license. More specifically, Siruna customers need to buy a commercial license if they:

• Sell software that requires customers to install the Siruna platform on their own machines
• Combine or integrate the Siruna platform with closed source software
• Run a commercial service (ASP, MSP or SaaS) that requires the Siruna platform
• Mobilize websites and web applications that contain advertisements
• Need services and support
